Alexander Berkmann Pointing a Gun at Henry Frick

1892, Homestead, Pennsylvania, USA — Anarchist Alexander Berkmann attempts to assassinate steel factory owner Henry Frick during the Homestead strike in 1892. The Homestead strike, which was one of the first and most bloodiest industrial strikes during the 1890’s, was sparked by Henry Frick’s decision to cut wages for union workers. Unfortunately, the strike was not very successful which was due largely in part to the hiring of Pinkerton detectives (or nonunion workers) who ran the plant. — Image by © Bettmann/CORBIS
